Brainsport Times Apr. 27, 2016

Tomorrow evening marks the start of the 2016 Saskatoon Road Runners Trail Race Series! In this week's Q&A we speak with the SRRA's Peter Goode to learn more about the series. It's exciting to know these races are for all levels of runners — as long as a conservative approach is taken, which Peter will get to.

Also, be sure to check out our "Product of the Week" — we're featuring another great trail shoe (last week was the Hoka One One Speedgoat).

Q&A with Peter Goode

Tara:
For those not familiar, can you tell us more about the SRRA's series of trail races?

Peter: The SRRA trail series is about five years old. It began with a fall trail race at Blackstrap Provincial Park, which I had planned as an SRRA end-of -season run and barbeque. It was so popular I decided to plan for three events in the following year. From that, the series developed with May, July and September events being created. Last year, because of conflicts with other May events, I moved the first race to April (and to avoid conflicts with a local duathlon). The date became a Thursday night. It was very popular so we are trying it again.

The series primary objective was to introduce trail running to our membership, many of who had primarily run only on the MVA trails and roads within Saskatoon. As trail running can be a lot of fun, plus it is such a good way to stay fit and add some variety to running, the series became popular very quickly.

Tara: What are you most excited about for this first race of the season?

Peter: Our April event is our "season opener" where the route is challenging, but not as intense or as long as some of the options in the summer and fall events. This is a great introduction to the series and is often attended by first timers. We also have great youth (under 16) participation — many now running in all three of our trail races.  What excites me about this first event is having so many new runners coming out. For some it is the first time they have entered any running
event!

Tara: For those who haven't done a trail race before, what advice do you have?

Peter: I usually offer two pieces of advice to those new to trail running:  One, try it! And two, take it easy! Running on trails is challenging for a variety of reasons — it can be hilly, the trails can be winding and uneven, and the effort expended can be more than what you expect it to be. I often tell new trail runners having experience with 10K or longer distances on the road to think about selecting a shorter distance for their first trail race — especially if they want to race it hard. Five kilometres on the trails can sometimes feel like 10K on the road, but you might come away from it with a bigger smile.

Tara: Would you tell us a bit more about the course — terrain, etc.?

Peter: Our first event is held at Meewasin Park, which is adjacent to Spadina Crescent and Whiteswan Drive. The start is near the parking lot beside the MVA washroom building, near the picnic tables. The route goes along the single track trail through the forest adjacent to the river, then climbs up a short hill and comes back along the open grassy park to the finish line. The open grass area is more like a cross-country run, but is challenging because there are more hills here than along the river trail. One lap is about 5K, and you have the choice of doing either one lap or two laps. Hotdogs at the finish!

Tara:
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Peter: My last bit of advice is to bring warm clothes to change into after and bring mosquito repellent. There may also be the odd wood tick so that mosquito repellent will be very useful.
